| | I had my first commercial art gallery show last night in Nashville. These are what I had in the show....
"Between the Creases" According to Chinese palmistry, hands are a gateway to our
thought, actions, and future. The lines on our hand, depending on the
length, thickness, placement, can determine the course of our lives.

Destiny Defined
People often go to temples to seek insights into their future. A
prayer is a asked while a person shakes a bamboo cup containing bamboo
sticks. The first stick that falls out is the one that contains the
answer to the prayer.

"Prayers on High"
Wishes or prayers are written onto a specially designed red slip of paper
tied onto an orange with string. Then, the whole thing is tossed into
the air with the aim of hooking it over a branch, thereby granting the
wish.

"Harmonious Foundation"
Some peple believe the placement and arrangment of one's house
plays a vital role in the quality of one's life. Much care is taken to
achieve harmony between the house and the natural environment.

"Fortuitous Marks"
Some people believe that moles on a person's face represent
certain fortunes or misfortunes. The placement of these moles have a
range of meaning from prosperity to luckiness to bad eating habits. As
a result, people have had certains ones removed so only the desirable
ones remain.
These are all 8" x 8", mixed media and wax on wood panels. Created September 2007. This series is based on ancient Chinese superstitions, many of them I have had personal encounterance with at one time or another. For instance: when I was eight my dad took me to get my face "de-mole." It as a painful process in which my face was poked and proded with a toothpick (yes, a toothpick!). But after a week of being mole-free, those stubborn little spots made their appearance on my face again. My mom blamed me for eating soy sauce. Apparently, you're not suppose to eat black-colored food after a de-moling procedure. Who knew? It's funny how silly this story sounds in retrospect, but at the time I was so sure that my soy sauce eating habits had cause my moles to reappear. I am not superstitious person, but I am both intrigued and fascinated by these Chinese superstitions.
Also, am happy to report that the show was success. All five pieces were sold. Finally, some money in my pocket! |
